Sound Absorption Overview Acoustical foams or other acoustical materials are used to line hard, sound-reflective surfaces to reduce noise levels. These materials are typically cellular or fibrous in nature in order to allow the sound energy to penetrate into the material and be dissipated prior to reaching a sound reflective surface. This reduces the reflected sound energy and minimizes reverberation allowing us to deal with only the primary noise source instead of the increased reverberant sound field. The absorption spectrum of acoustic materials can be changed by the appropriate use of laminated facings. Materials can be "tuned" in order to address your particular problem frequency. Facings also assist in physical performance of the absorber material allowing sound absorptive materials to be used in environments where unfaced they typically would not appropriate. Sound absorption is directly related to the amount of available surface area treated. Within any given enclosed space the more reflective surfaces treated the greater the sound absorption will be. To achieve the best acoustical performance it is important to know the sound spectrum of the noise source. Technicon Industries can provide field services to measure noise emissions and recommend the best materials for your application. |
