Traditionally in the construction of box coolers, steel, brass or bronze materials have been
used. The new Fernstrum box cooler construction uses the same materials as our
GRIDCOOLERS®,
90-10 copper-nickel. The tube used is our "D" series tubing or a small diameter round tube. Approximate size of the units is the same as that of our
GRIDCOOLERS
sized for a 1/2 mph flow, except for the fact that the tubes are mounted differently.
Installation
When installing box coolers, use the following guidelines:
1. The interior Sea chest
walls and cover plate should be at least as thick as the hull plating.
2. There should be a
gap at least 6" between the box coolers and the sea chest walls.
3. The sea chest openings
in the hull must cover at least 50% of the hull/sea chest area.
4. The box coolers must be
mounted parallel to the hull for the greatest efficiency.
5. Use angle iron as thick as the hull
plating to construct the lip that the cover plate attaches to.
- Installation Example-
The following example is for a dredge using box coolers for its generator and propulsion systems.
The installation drawing below is for the generator's box coolers.
